The Bridge

The Evolution of the Grade Chart

From the original 1965 Classification Chart through the last LRH-era edition in 1981 — six eras of development that built the Bridge to Total Freedom.

1965

Classification and Gradation Chart

The Original Grade Chart — 26 September 1965

What Changed

  • Original chart establishing the Classification and Gradation system
  • Class 0-VII auditor training levels
  • Grade 0 Release through Clear on the processing side
  • Two-sided structure: Training (left) and Processing (right)
  • No OT levels yet — ends at Clear

Historical Context

Published on 26 September 1965, this was L. Ron Hubbard's first formal organization of the entire Bridge into a single chart. It established the fundamental two-column structure — Classification (training) on the left, Gradation (processing) on the right — that would persist through all subsequent editions. This chart gave Scientologists their first complete map of the road to Clear.

1970

Classification Gradation and Awareness Chart

The Chart Expands — OT Levels and Awareness Characteristics

What Changed

  • Renamed to 'Classification Gradation and Awareness Chart of Levels and Certificates'
  • OT I through OT VIII added for the first time
  • Awareness Characteristics column added (21 levels from Unexistence to Source)
  • Introductory levels formalized (HAS Course, Communication Course)
  • Dianetics integrated as a specific auditing level
  • Class VIII auditor certification added
  • 'How to Use This Chart' section added

Historical Context

The 1970 edition was a major expansion reflecting five years of research and development since the original. The addition of OT levels I-VIII extended the Bridge beyond Clear for the first time. The Awareness Characteristics column — mapping states of awareness from the lowest (Unexistence) to the highest (Source) — gave the chart a philosophical depth that went beyond mere training and processing levels.

1974

Classification Gradation and Awareness Chart

Refinements to the Standard Bridge

What Changed

  • Refinements to the 1970 structure and level descriptions
  • Clearer delineation of prerequisites between levels
  • Updated descriptions of abilities gained at each level
  • Training requirements more precisely specified

Historical Context

The 1974 edition refined and clarified the expanded structure introduced in 1970. While not a revolutionary change, it represented Hubbard's ongoing effort to make the Bridge more precise and navigable. The refinements focused on clearer level descriptions and more explicit prerequisites, making it easier for students and auditors to track their progress.

1975

The Bridge to a New World

Major Expansion — Flag Rundowns and Upper Training

What Changed

  • Titled 'THE BRIDGE TO A NEW WORLD' for the first time
  • Class IX through Class XII auditor levels added
  • L-10, L-11, and L-12 Flag-only rundowns introduced
  • Major expansion of upper training levels
  • More detailed descriptions of abilities gained
  • Flag Service Organization exclusive services delineated

Historical Context

The 1975 edition marked a significant expansion, particularly in the upper levels. The introduction of the 'Bridge to a New World' title reflected Hubbard's vision of Scientology's broader purpose. The addition of Classes IX-XII and the Flag rundowns (L-10, L-11, L-12) represented services available only at the Flag Service Organization in Clearwater, Florida, establishing Flag as the pinnacle of Scientology training and processing.

1978

The Bridge to a New World

The Most Comprehensive LRH-Era Chart

What Changed

  • Expanded Grades — each grade now has multiple processes
  • New Era Dianetics (NED) replaces standard Dianetics
  • Drug Rundown added as a prerequisite lower-bridge step
  • Objectives processes formalized in the lower bridge
  • Most comprehensive and detailed chart of the LRH era
  • Precise routing from first service through OT levels

Historical Context

The 1978 edition is considered by many to be the definitive LRH-era Grade Chart. The introduction of New Era Dianetics (NED) represented Hubbard's latest refinement of Dianetics technology. The Expanded Grades gave each processing level multiple processes rather than a single one, creating a more thorough and complete bridge. The Drug Rundown addressed the growing societal issue of drug use. This chart represents the most complete picture of the Bridge as Hubbard intended it.

1981

The Bridge to Total Freedom

The Last LRH-Era Chart

What Changed

  • Final chart published during L. Ron Hubbard's direct oversight
  • Title changed to 'The Bridge to Total Freedom'
  • Represents the culmination of Hubbard's work on the Bridge
  • Last chart before the controversial post-1982 alterations

Historical Context

The 1981 edition was the last Grade Chart published under L. Ron Hubbard's direct supervision. After this, the chart underwent significant alterations in 1982 and beyond under new Church management — changes that many independent Scientologists consider departures from standard technology. This is the chart that AOGP and other independent organizations consider the last authentic representation of the Bridge as Hubbard designed it.
